Greetings,
To honor and pay homage to our favorite 29+ trail devil, we sent the newly-birthed Krampus out to our friend Paul at Paul Component Engineering.
Paul’s a big believer in Krampus and owns enough of ‘em to supply a small militia. We dig his affinity for weirdness, and we wanted to see what dirty masterpiece he could cook up with our new colorway and an assortment of parts at his disposal. We even tossed in a custom graphics package to make this gift 1 of 1. Needless to say, we weren’t disappointed.
Paul and his tricked-out Krampus hit the road to Single Speed USA in Salida, CO, this past October, where some lucky folks got to lay eyes on the beast in broad daylight. We’ll let Paul himself speak to his fascination with Krampus and all other Surly machinations here.
We got swept up in all the Krampus X Paul Components love and are giving away a Krampus frameset built up with PC components. Sign up to win it.
I have close to ten Krampus’s. Why?
I was always enamored with Surly but when the Krampus came out I WAS ON BOARD! I’m not totally sure but it just seemed for someone of my age, skill and preferred riding experience it just seemed like the perfect combo.
I’ve never really latched onto suspension of any kind and it seemed with this sized tire the reasons to do so were practically zip. So then I bought one of the original green Krampii and I was smitten. Then I bought 4 more, one of every size for the shop to be used as loaners. I wanted everyone to ride one of these, and hopefully take one bikepacking too. Leaning against my fence at home is me flat black “townie” Krampus. My single speed mountain bike has always been a Krampus, or a custom titanium frame I had made that used the exact same geometry and tires. Currently I am on a pre-production Krampus single speed in a very special color.
A big part of the allure is the guts to make this bike. Just like the first 1x1 or the first production fatbike. And now there’s the new Moonlander. I just really admire people breaking the mold, and the Krampus to me is the pinnacle of that idea. In fact I have often said it is my favorite bicycle of all time.
Have a good ride,
Paul
