I’ve lived in many parts of the country and the only place I’ve ever lived where the trails are closed when it’s wet outside is in Minneapolis. I’m not complaining or anything because a lot of people use them here and if everyone used them when they were wet it would absolutely destroy them. What that has done, however, is give me a keen awareness of Spring. When the tundra thaws and dries out at the end of Winter I start to get the shakes. I’m always eager for some hot off-road action and it seems like it takes forever for Spring’s soggy temperament to sort itself out, leaving only sweet ribbons of singletrack upon which to hurt one’s self.

Now, the details by model:
Karate Monkey Ops: SM – XL remaining
Karate Monkey has history. Surly introduced the frameset in 2003. It was the second production 29er available on the market, so you can certainly say it was ahead of its time. The curved seat tube accomplished wonders for handling on a big wheel platform. People continually rave about the Karate Monkey’s solid ride characteristics. This Ops model is the most advanced, hottest spec Karate Monkey bike we’ve ever offered. FOX Float 32 fork. Full Deore 10spd drive train. MDS dropout system stiffens the rear triangle. Karate Monkey is a versatile trail rig and one hell of a bikepacking machine.
Ice Cream Truck: XS – XL remaining
You might be asking, “Ice Cream Truck is a Trail bike?” Absolutely. Its pedigree checks out. Think of the ICT as a Fat Instigator because that’s what our design team set out to create. Along with Insti, ICT is the most sophisticated frame Surly has ever designed. Aggressive trail numbers built with our flared “trumpet” tubeset and MDS dropouts add up to a trail crusher. Oversized headtube and thru axle fork mean this bike is plug-and-play with Bluto forks. A second wheelset can transform ICT into a 29+ trail shredder as well. It’s two bikes in one!
Krampus: SM and MD remaining
Krampus is the bike that started the Plus+ tire revolution. And no wonder. This bike is possessed. Seriously, it makes you ride fast. The 29+ wheel/tire combo gets up to speed and just keeps rolling. It corners like nobody’s business. In short, it inspires confidence that sometimes exceeds known skill level. That’s the space where awesome happens. Krampus is a great first trail bike. The geometry and 29+ wheel will also open new paths for seasoned MTB riders. Krampus makes a fantastic Plus+ tire bikepacking rig. Even when loaded with frame bags and a harness the trail handling shines through.
Krampus Ops: SM and MD remaining
Everything I said above applies to Krampus Ops. However, Ops has a couple of spec/feature upgrades – Mr Whirly OD crankset and MDS dropout system. As mentioned above the MDS dropouts stiffen things up to create a rigid rear triangle.
Instigator: XS and SM remaining
We saved the best for last. Instigator just rips. Plain and simple. Instigator is the bike for riders who like to show up their full-sus friends. As our product manager, Adam, once told me: “Instigator is your bike if your riding style is sideways as much as straight ahead.” The Dirt Wizard 26+ tire owns the trail and excels in the traction department. The early adopters of this model realized all of these benefits right away. 26+ is ideal for smaller riders looking to get stupid on a bike. And they are in luck since we have XS and SM remaining. Spec and features are outstanding. FOX Float 34 fork. Shimano SLX 10spd par
